I’m asking for help to bring my 6-issue graphic novel, Patient, to life. On the surface, Patient is a mix of horror and comedy that plays out during a zombie outbreak. But deep down, it’s a story about depression, anxiety, coping skills (or lack thereof), and a commentary about how people do and/or don’t relate to each other in times of crisis.
Format:
6-Issue Graphic Novel (22 full-color pages each) with spinoff and franchise potential.
Patient is a dramatic examination of mental health and a prescription-dependent culture disguised as a blood-hungry horror/thriller zombie story pairing appropriate comedic elements, such as those found in It Follows, and thrilling suspense like the kind seen in Netflix's Bird Box, Patient also examines how life-or-death situations can show a person who they really are, and test the tenacity of the human spirit.
Characters:
|
The Patient: DOGAN BROWN is a lanky 19-year-old stoner whose myriad health problems cause him constant anxiety and distress. Dogan often carries weed and a pipe and some of his frequently taken prescriptions in his hidden hoodie pockets. He wears a pink cast on his left arm full of names and obscenities scribbled in black sharpie; his body is as wrecked from failed trick attempts as his skateboard.
|
|
The Nurse: MARIA is a nurse who's seen it all (or so she thinks...), and she's tired of everyone's B.S. Nothing gets done in this clinic without Maria, but you definitely don't want to be on her bad side. And don't bother lying to her; she already knows the truth.
|
|
The Receptionist: OLIVIA is a sardonic half-Spanish, half-Italian clinic receptionist and student. She dresses business casual in the most goth/punk way possible without getting written up. Olivia suffers from depression, which she doesn't address in the healthiest of ways. She’s almost never without her cell phone, which she often uses to play word games to challenge her perpetually impulsive brain.
|
|
The Doctor: Dr. Glover's compassion is unmatched at his clinic. He keeps things light with "dad jokes," but it's all a facade to conceal problems in his personal life. Good thing he can always throw himself into his work...

Our Target Audience:
Mature Audiences who are fans of horror/sci-fi/zombies, those coping with anxiety and depression through art and literature, and fans of elevated horror films.
I'll be honest: “Patient” is not for everyone. This series contains explicit content such as violence, gore, drug abuse, self-harm, adult language, adult situations — oh! And sex. You’ll probably see a couple of [CENSORED]. Maybe part of a [CENSORED]. You definitely see a [CENSORED] a few times, so please, proceed with caution.
If you had a hard time getting through the pandemic or have difficulty talking to people in any situation ever, I can absolutely relate, and not only do I want to entertain you, I want this series to be comforting, too. I want it to give you a laugh and maybe a scream, but in the end, I hope it feels like a warm hug that says: "You’re not alone, not by a long shot."
Funding:
Helping me tell this story is a phenomenally talented artist from Istanbul, Turkey named Buğra Batuhan Berah (Post Malone's "Big Rig" #1). While we were able to complete the first issue of Patient, and all six issues are written, there are still five more that need to be illustrated, colored, and lettered. I've put my plasma, sweat, and tears into making this comic, but, as I’m sure most of you already know, great art ain’t cheap, and as much as I'd like to, I can't personally afford a wizard like Buğra to make this story pop off the page without your help. My goal is to raise enough money to complete each issue, get some cool perks for you, and have some cash leftover to commission a few variant covers and some more promotional art as well.

Risks and challenges:
I know almost everyone is having a rough time. The biggest challenges here are people wanting to support but not having the money to do so, and people who have no interest in what I'm trying to do.
Let's face it. The economy is in the toilet. I get it. And so many people around us need help for more than their art. People are running crowdfunding campaigns for their health, their pets' health, to recover from deaths and tragedies, and raising money for other things they need to live and help them get back on their feet during a very challenging time.
So what makes this campaign more important than those ones?
NOTHING.
In fact, please, put those campaigns first. Seriously, take care of your people. But if anyone likes my humor and storytelling and want to treat themselves to something fun, please donate and/or share. And if you're someone who has tons of money and feels like supporting this funny, creepy, and awkwardly sexy graphic novel, please donate. And if you don't have the money, that's okay, too. (I honestly wish there was more I could do to support you.) But even sharing the campaign with people who might like it would be much appreciated. And regardless of your support, I hope good things are coming your way!

In Closing:
